Versatile, stylish cabled socks suitable for men, women and children. Instructions are for women's socks, size 5-9.

 

Knitted Measurements
Will fit women's shoe size 5-9.

 

Materials
2 balls Parklane #2 (or color of your choice)
US Size 4 and 6 double-pointed knitting needles

 

Gauge
Approx 5 st = 1" in stockinette stitch on #6 needles

 

Pattern Stitch
Preparation Rd: *P1, k3; rep * to end.
Rd 1: *P1, slip 1 st, k2, pass sl st over k2; rep * to end.
Rd 2: *P1, k1, yo, k1; rep * to end.
Rd 3 & 4: *P1, k3; rep * to end.
Rd 5 & 6: Rep Rd 1 and 2.
Rep Rd 1-6 for pattern.

 

To knit socks (make 2):

2 x 2 Ribbing:
With Size 4 needles, cast on 40 stitches and divide evenly onto 4 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for end of rnd (between needles 1 and 4), and slip marker every rnd. Work 2 x 2 ribbing for 2".

 

Leg:
Switch to Size 6 needles and work in Pattern Stitch for 6". (Note down the last row number worked as this will be picked up later).

 

Heel:
Heel is worked over 20 sts; combine stitches on Needles 1 and 4 onto one needle (Needle 1).

 

Heel Flap:
With Needle 4, work sts on Needle 1 (20 sts on one needle). Turn.
Row 1: Purl 20 sts, turn.
Row 2 (RS): *Sl 1, k1; rep * to end, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, p to end, turn.

 

Rep Rows 2 and 3 until there are a total of 21 rows.

 

Turn Heel:
Mark center of heel.
Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k to 2 sts past center, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk (closing gap), k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog (closing gap), p1, turn.

 

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked, omitting k1 and p1 at the end of last 2 rows when necessary -- 12 sts.

 

Gussets:
With a spare dpn, k 6 sts. With Needle 1, knit 6 sts, pick up and k 11 sts along side of heel flap; with Needles 2 and 3, continue in Pattern Stitch across 20 instep sts; with Needle 4, pick up and k 11 sts along side of heel flap, k 6 sts -- total number of sts=48 sts. Place marker for end of rnd.

 

Shape Gussets:
Rnd 1: For Needle 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; for Needles 2 and 3, cont in Pattern Stitch; for Needle 4, k1, ssk, k to end.

 

Rnd 2: Work even in St st on Needles 1 and 4; work even in Pattern Stitch on Needles 2 and 3.

 

Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until there are 40 sts.

 

Foot:
Continue even in Pattern Stitch until foot measures 6 1/4" from back of heel.

 

Shape Toe:
Rnd 1: *For Needle 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; for Needle 2, k1, ssk, k to end;
Repeat * for Needles 3 and 4.

 

Rnd 2: Knit

 

Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until there are 16 sts.

 

Finishing:
Knit sts from Needle 1 with Needle 4. Slip sts from Needle 2 onto Needle 3. Cut yarn, leaving a 16" tail for grafting the toe. Thread a needle with this yarn tail and with the wrong sides facing each other, graft these rem sts together using Kitchener Stitch. Turn the sock inside out and weave the end of the yarn into the back of the stitches.

 

Weave in all yarn ends, making sure not to leave any knots.
